‘I got clipped!’
Excitingly shouted my 11 year old to her older sister as she was warming up for a full day of volleyball. I smiled at this simple gesture the girls have been participating in between other teams.
Volleyball is a commitment of several practices throughout the week and volleyball tournaments taking up entire weekends if you have multiple daughters on different teams. Bleachers for parents can be unbearable, although it would be wise to purchase one of those comfortable stadium looking seats.
I have to admit volleyball was not the most exciting sport to watch of my girls. I didn’t play volleyball in school. Therefore, I was lost at watching and understanding the sport. The rules didn’t make sense to me. How can one girl go in and out of the game without having to stand at the side of the court for an official substitute? And why does one girl have a different color shirt? What the heck is a wheel barrel?
Since I’ve started watching volleyball more often due to my girls participating every year, I’d have to say I’m starting to understand and enjoy it more every time.
But today, after seeing all of the girls from every team ‘get clipped’ melted my heart. The girls secretly go up to other girls and clip a clothes pin to them somewhere with the intention of not getting caught. When the girl who was clipped realizes it, they have a cute little message on their clothes pins such as ‘be happy’, ‘love your hair’, and ‘ACE’. Volleyball is a tough sport. It’s enlightening for the girls to receive messages of positivity even from opposing teams.
To make things a little easier for parents to make this craft, there are colored clothespins and volleyball beads you can buy on Amazon.
Happy Clipping!
